Kandinsky was a Russian painter of the 19th and 20th centuries and is considered to be the beginning of Expressionism. He was of German descent through his maternal grandmother and spoke German. He studied painting and ethnography, piano, cello, law, and economics. He lived in Russia, Germany, and Switzerland and traveled all over Europe. His fascination with color lasted throughout his life. He became interested in abstract art in the early 19th century.
